Make your iPhone a bit more Gaelic

One of the best ways of learning a new language is to have it around you as much as possible, so here is how to get more Gaelic on your iPhone. It doesn’t make everything appear in Gaelic, but all times and dates are translated and a few other bits and bobs too.

  1. Launch the Settings App
    Settings App
  2. Scroll down a bit and tap ‘General’
    General Settings
  3. Scroll down a bit and tap ‘Language & Region’
    Language & Region
  4. Tap ‘Other Languages…’
    Other Languages…
  5. Pull down to reveal the search bar and start typing ‘Gaelic’
    Search
  6. Tap ‘Gàidhlig’ and then tap ‘Done’
    Gaidhlig
  7. Tap ‘Prefer Scottish Gaelic’
    Prefer Scottish Gaelic
  8. The Screen will go black and briefly display “Updating Languages” before going completely black for an unsettling amount of time. Do not worry! After a wee while you will be returned to the ‘Language & Region’ pane of the Settings App.
  9. Press the Home button then Launch the Calendar App to check it’s worked.*

  10. If you don’t like it you can change back to all English by returning the the Language & Region settings, tapping ‘Edit’ at the top of the screen and using the 3-line icons to drag the displayed languages in to you preferred order, i.e. English at the top.

* Sadly Apple have removed much of the language support from the Calendar App, however the date on the lock screen is still shown in Gaelic and Google apps and the BBC website, amongst others, pick up your phones language.

Some apps may not work quite properly, but check their settings in the Settings App and you may be able to set their language back to English (this applies to Huawei Health, but may include others).
